Pre-Conference Curling Tournament

Register for curling tournament

Pre-conference activity | Monday, June 19 | 3:00–5:00 PM in the USA rink

This year at STC, we’re taking advantage of the US Olympic ice rink for a curling tournament! Though Scotland is regarded as curling’s birthplace, the sport is played around the world, thanks to its introduction into the Olympics in 1988.

What is this game of rocks and brooms all about? Curling is a sport in which two teams of four players each take turns sliding heavily polished 40-pound granite rocks (also called stones) down a sheet of ice towards a circular target at the opposite end of the rink (called the house). The team scores by getting the stones as near to the center of the house as possible. Teams will play against each other in a round robin tournament. Each game is approximately 10-15 minutes.

Never curled before? No problem! Just grab your street clothes, sneakers, boots or rubber bottom shoes, a venue-provided curling broom and helmet, and a team of four people (called lead, second, third and skip). Report to the curling registration table on the second floor of the Lake Placid Conference Center on Monday, June 19 at 2:30pm to be ready for a 3pm start. If you don’t have a team or don’t have enough players for a team, we’ll get you on one. Please bring any snacks or drinks you feel you may need during the event.

A $10 fee per person for use of the ice and equipment will be required. Payment and signing of a waiver will be done onsite at the conference center.

Games will conclude by 5pm and medals handed out to the first, second, and third place teams.
